Overview

Police in Silverton shot and killed William Kyle Bluestone, 21, who they say claimed to have a gun during standoff at an apartment Friday.

Officers had responded to reports of a domestic violence disturbance in the 900 block of Reserve Street about 12:40 p.m., according to the Oregon State Police, which is investigating the fatal shooting.

A man at the apartment, Bluestone, 21, barricaded himself inside a bedroom when the officers arrived and claimed he was armed with a handgun, the state police said.

An hourlong standoff ensued as the Silverton officers attempted to get Bluestone to surrender, police said. The standoff ended after an officer opened fire on Bluestone, killing him.

Oregon State Police released the names of two officers involved in the shooting — Jonathan Lamoreaux, 38, and Tim Hein, 31. Lamoreaux has been with Silverton Police Department for 9 years, and Hein has been with the department for 6 years. State police did not specify which one fired the shot that killed Bluestone, but police said the officer who fired the fatal rounds was placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation, which is being overseen by the Marion County District Attorney’s Office. The officer was wearing a body camera, which recorded the encounter.

The Oregon State Police provided no details about what prompted the officer to shoot.

Authorities have not released the footage, citing an active investigation.
