Overview

Phoenix police shot and killed a man who they say charged at officers while wielding a machete Monday night.

Tobias Torres, 35, was fatally shot at an apartment near 59th Avenue and Roosevelt Street, police said.

Police received a phone call late Monday night from a woman who said her roommate was fighting with a former boyfriend, Torres. The woman told authorities that Torres had a machete and that she crawled out of one of the apartment windows in fear for her life, according to Sgt. Trent Crump, a police spokesman.

Officers arrived and entered the apartment, finding four children under age 10. The officers confronted the woman’s roommate and asked whether Torres was still in the building. She said he was not, police said.

As police searched the apartment, Torres barged out of a bathroom clutching a machete, Crump said. Torres made several advances on police officers, cutting two officers, Crump said. Officers opened fire, striking Torres several times.
