Overview

A 7-month-old Chester Township girl severely beaten by her 6-foot-3, 300-pound relative has died after surviving for about 15 hours on life support at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Dy Azijah Nix, wrongly identified in first reports as Tanisha, was pronounced dead by the Philadelphia Medical Examiner's Office at 5 p.m. Thursday.

The girl's pregnant mother, 22-year-old Jamilah Starkey, originally identified by police as Handy, of the 2300 block of Bethel Road, died at home of asphyxiation and multiple blunt-force injuries, according to the Delaware County medical examiner. Starkey's two other children, Joeionah Handy, 6, and Glenn Handy, 3, were in critical condition yesterday at Children's Hospital.

Police said live-in cousin Lawrence James Richardson, 22, who had recently moved in with the family, used his bare hands to beat all four family members. Police said Richardson, who had recently been fired from his job at the Prospect Park Nursing Home, was let go because of "episodes" at work. He played a piano at the nursing home and would become enraged, police said.
