Overview

The wanted felon who was shot by two deputies after a pursuit in Vista last week has died, a sheriff’s official said.

Sergio Weick, 33, was shot in the chest Thursday afternoon during an altercation in a gated community on Bronze Way near Iron Drive.

The deputies spotted Weick, who was a known gang member wanted for violating his probation, in a black car on North Santa Fe Avenue at Knapp Drive about 12:30 p.m. When they tried to pull him over, he sped off.

Sheriff’s Lt. Kenn Nelson said the deputies were aware of Weick’s criminal history which included a February 2015 standoff. He had also “made comments in the past about harming officers,” the lieutenant said.

Deputies chased Weick for about 8 minutes to the Copper Hill community gate on Bronze, where he hit a curb and stopped. He ditched the car and ran into the complex with deputies at his heels. Some sort of confrontation happened soon after and both deputies fired, Nelson said.

The deputies involved in the shooting were not wearing body cameras. Although deputies at the Vista substation were outfitted with body cameras during a pilot program to try out the technology in February, the trial had already ended.
