Overview

The man who was shot and killed by Redondo Beach police last week has been identified by authorities as Sergio Acosta, 24, of Redondo Beach.

The incident started just after 4 p.m. Thursday, July 26, when police received a call about a man holding a gun in the 2500 block of Gates Avenue in north Redondo Beach. As police were responding, an additional update came through that the man was chasing someone and possibly shooting, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has said.

At some point, officers arrived and shot Acosta at least once in the upper torso. An airsoft gun was recovered at the scene, and sheriff’s Lt. Rodney Moore has described it as “very realistic-looking.”

Legal Action

According to a document released on September 17, 2020, prosecutors determined that police Sgt. John Anderson "reasonably concluded the immediate use of deadly force was necessary" when he fired at Sergio Acosta.
