Overview 
Avondale police on Sunday identified the man who was killed when officers returned gunfire Saturday.
R.T. McGinty, who was 27 and from Avondale, opened fire on police when they tried to stop him at about 4:45 p.m. Saturday as he rode a bicycle near 3rd Street and Rose lane, said Avondale Police Sgt. Brandon Busse.
McGinty began shooting as two police officers stepped out of the patrol car, Busse said.
He struck one officer in the face, Busse said. The officer was airlifted to an area hospital, is in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery, Busse said.
Officers returned fire and fatally shot McGinty, Busse said.
“R.T. McGinty was also transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased,” Busse said.
