Overview

50-year-old Rommel Mendoza allegedly armed with a “sword-type weapon” was killed Wednesday morning in an officer-involved shooting in North Hollywood.

Officers were dispatched to the 6400 block of Elmer Avenue around 10:45 a.m. following a report of a man armed with an unknown weapon causing a disturbance when the shooting occurred.

Mendoza was pronounced dead at the scene, and officers recovered the weapon, police said.

According to neighbors, the suspect was a troublemaker and they have had issues with him in the past.

“I’ve only really known him for the last six months and he’s been very threatening,” said one neighbor. “He told me has a gun and if anyone breaks into his yard…he would shoot them.”

It was not immediately clear what lead up to the shooting, and the force investigative department was taking over the case.
