Overview

A suspect is shot and dies as a result of his injuries during a chase with Yakima police last night. Below is the official release from the YPD.

On 4/12/2014 at about 2305 (11:05 PM) hours a Yakima Police Department patrol sergeant observed a vehicle being operated recklessly on S. Fair Ave. The sergeant initiated a traffic stop of the vehicle and it pulled into a driveway of a residence in the During the traffic stop the suspect tried to flee and rammed into the police vehicle. The suspect vehicle then fled northbound on Fair Ave. with police in pursuit. The vehicle entered I-82 at Fair Ave southbound, with police still in pursuit. The vehicle exited I-82 at the Nob Hill off ramp then immediately reentered the freeway using the southbound I-82 entrance ramp. By this timeseveral fully marked Yakima Police vehicles were pursuing the suspect.

As the suspect moved onto the on ramp it turned east into the median area between the on ramp and the freeway, where it became briefly stuck on rocks. The vehicle then freed itself and rammed police vehicles again. At this point an officer fired several shots at the vehicle. The vehicle then again traveled east through the median area between the on ramp and the freeway, went across the southbound lanes of the freeway, into the center median and struck the center wire barrier where it was forced to stop by the barrier.

Officers surrounded the vehicle to keep it from fleeing further. At this point the suspect was taken into custody. The suspect was found to have received at least one gunshot wound and was transported to a local hospital where he died a short time later.
