Overview

18 year-old Richard Risher was killed in an exchange of gunfire with Los Angeles police at the Nickerson Gardens Los Angeles Public Housing Apartments where police had extra patrols on duty.

The shooting occurred about 11 p.m. near 111th and Antwerp streets at the Nickerson Gardens public housing project, where police were conducting extra patrols.

At the housing project, according to police, officers saw a group of people who began dispersing and running away. As police chased them, the suspect produced a handgun and shots were exchanged.

During the gun battle, an officer was struck in the left arm and the suspect was struck by police gunfire, police said.

Based on preliminary information, Beck said the gunman fired at least ten rounds.

Risher was pronounced dead at the scene. The officer was taken to the hospital.

KTLA reported that the suspect’s mother, Lisa Simpson, said he was running across the street when he was shot and killed by police.
