Overview

35 year-old Rekeitha Calhoun died in custody. She was found dead in her jail cell 30 minutes after an attendee brought her lunch.

From the prison report:

On 03-10-09 at approximately 0900 hours, Lt. Rex Calhoun, with the Shelby county Sheriffs Office, executed a search warrant, assisted by the Shelby County, Sheriffs Emergency Response Team. The Search Warrant was executed at 1868 CR 3754, in Shelby County. While executing this warrant, three suspects were located inside the residence, (1) one handgun, Marijuana, and Crack Cocaine.

The raid team was composed of Shelby County Sheriffs Department Deputies and one State of Texas Game Warden. This Search Warrant was executed based on information gained from an undercover investigation where narcotics had been purchased from this residence on several prior occasions. Entry was made into the residence and three suspects, Rekietha Calhoun, Aaron Long and Kristasha Bell, were taken into custody without incident. All Three suspects were transported to the Shelby County Jail without incident and arrived at the jail at approximately 9:38 am. All three suspects were then booked into the Shelby County Jail without incident and placed into holding cells, each suspect in a separate cell alone.

At approximately 11:30 am, Shelby County Jail / Commissary employee Pam Weaver was told by Kristasha Bell that her mother Rekietha Calhoun, had been sick and had thrown up in the next cell. Pam Weaver then checked on Rekietha Calhoun who said that she was fine and just needed a clean jail jumpsuit. All three suspects were served lunch at approximately 12:00 noon and all three took their lunch trays at the cell doors. When jail / commissary employee Pam Weaver returned to the cells to retrieve the lunch trays at approximately 12:30 pm Rekietha Calhoun was found unresponsive on the floor of the cell.
