Overview

ORIGINAL RELEASE:
On July 9, 2013, at approximately 7:30 a.m., the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office received a phone call from an Adult Probation Officer in reference to a male subject that was on probation threatening to harm himself with a weapon. Immediate attempts to contact the subject via phone were unsuccessful while Deputies were en route to his residence.

At approximately 7:40 a.m., Deputies arrived at the subject’s residence and attempted to call out the subject from his residence; they received no response. At approximately 8:45 a.m., Deputies made entry to the residence. The subject was not located in his residence but Deputies did locate an empty handgun case in his room. A search of immediate area was conducted by Deputies. At approximately 9:00 a.m., contact was made with the subject via cell phone. Using the cell phone’s tracking system, a general location of his whereabouts was obtained. Deputies responded to the 8100 block of south 7E where he was located in a dirt field west of 7E.

Deputies made contact with the subject who was armed with a handgun. The subject was given multiple commands to drop the weapon and failed to comply. During the confrontation, four Deputies discharged their firearms with multiple rounds striking the suspect. Rural Metro Ambulance was called to the scene. The subject was transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at approximatley 10:04 a.m.

The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Bureau is currently on scene investigating the incident.
