Overview

A man shot and killed by a sheriff’s deputy in Fort Collins early Saturday was armed with a large pair of scissors, investigators say.

Philip B. Salazar, 38, was holding a woman hostage when SWAT officers stormed a mobile home where he was holed up, officials say. Authorities say the deputy fired his rifle several times at Salazar as the armed man moved toward him.

The shooting happened at 401 North Timberline Road after the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office was called to the address on reports of a domestic disturbance.

When deputies arrived, officials say, they learned that a woman was being held against her will.

Negotiators worked for hours to end the situation before Salazar was fatally shot, authorities say.

Salazar was pronounced dead at Poudre Valley Hospital.
