Overview

On April 4, 2022, Patrick Lyoya, a 26-year-old Black man, was killed by Grand Rapids police after a struggle during a traffic stop.

The police in Grand Rapids, Mich., released videos on Wednesday April 13, showing a white officer fatally shooting Lyoya in the back of the head.

The officer, who has not been named, was lying on the back of Mr. Lyoya before he appeared to shoot him in the head. In the seconds before the shooting, Mr. Lyoya and the officer wrestled on the ground and seemed to be fighting for control of the officer’s Taser.

Legal Action

On Thursday, June 9, 2022, Christopher Becker, the Kent County prosecuting attorney, charged Officer Schurr, who is white, with second-degree murder.
