Overview

Stranded on the New Jersey Turnpike past midnight after their SUV broke down, a Brooklyn man and Queens woman walking in the roadway were struck and killed by a police cruiser Wednesday, state troopers said. Officer Arsenio Pecora of Bergen County’s Washington Township Police Department was driving north on the turnpike’s eastern spur when he plowed into Jason Champion and Nuwnah LaRoche just after 1 a.m., officials said. The victims were hit as they walked in the left northbound lane near the Vince Lombardi service area in Secaucus after their 2001 Cadillac Escalade became disabled, cops said. Champion, 41, and LaRoche, 34, died at the scene.
