Overview

Police say one man was killed and another injured in an officer-involved shooting Sunday morning. Two other people were also shot, but police say they were not shot by officers.

Elkhart police released the names of the shooting victims Sunday afternoon:

Norman Gary, 29 years old of Elkhart, was shot and died at the scene. The Elkhart County Coroner’s Office is anticipating an autopsy will be performed on Monday December 5, 2016.

Jazzlyn Crase, 22 years old of Elkhart, was shot and transported by ambulance to Elkhart General Hospital where she is currently being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Delanos Johnson, 24 years old of Elkhart, was shot and transported by ambulance to Memorial Hospital South Bend where he is currently being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Shawn Scott, 21 years old of Elkhart, was shot and transported by subjects to Elkhart General Hospital where he is currently being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

It started as a burglary investigation in the 500 block of Capitol Blvd. just before 4 a.m. this morning. While on scene officers heard gunfire nearby in the 1800 block of Decamp Ave. Elkhart Police Chief Ed Windbigler tells us two officers ran over and exchanged gunfire with two people leaving the scene in a vehicle, killing one and injuring another.

While investigating, a third gunshot victim was found and taken to Elkhart General Hospital.

A fourth victim drove himself to EGH with a gunshot wound, according to Windbigler.

Windbigler says the only two people who could have been shot by the officers were in the car.

"There are numerous locations in which gunfire occurred, all associated with the event," according to a release from the Elkhart Police Department.

Windbigler says police believe the initial burglary call is unrelated to the shooting.

No officers were injured.

As per routine in an officer-involved shooting, state police are investigating.

Elkhart Police Department Sgt. Chris Snyder told WSBT 22 he didn't know if the officers involved were wearing body cameras. He says he expects to release officer information on Tuesday.
