Overview

Police Officer James Schmidt was driving 90 mph on Linton Boulevard last week when he lost control of his car, killing a young Boca Raton mother, a report released Friday said.

Schmidt, 27, was eastbound at twice the posted speed limit answering a domestic violence call less than a mile away on Laver's Circle, the Florida Highway Patrol's preliminary report found.

Nancy Mervil, 24, died instantly at the intersection of Linton Boulevard and Catherine Drive.

Delray Beach police had little to say about the report and no opinion about whether Schmidt's speed was acceptable.

"Going that fast on Linton Boulevard is probably going to be very difficult to explain, but we're going to wait until FHP comes out with the final report before we have any comment on that," police Capt. Ralph Phillips said.
