Overview

Miguel Hernandez, 39 was killed in a deputy-involved shooting during a traffic stop in Santa Clarita. The shooting took place about 7:50 p.m. Jan. 14, 2016 in a residential area near Nathan Hill and Shangri-La drives, said Los Angeles County sheriff’s Deputy Trina Schrader. Hernandez died at a hospital later that night, coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter said.

According to the sheriff’s department, the shooting occurred after a deputy pulled over a car matching the description of a vehicle driven by someone suspected of assault with a deadly weapon. The driver jumped out of the car and began yelling profanities at the deputy, according to the sheriff’s department. The deputy ordered the driver to put his hands up in the air but he did not comply, and then he allegedly turned away from the deputy and reached behind his back, appearing to grab a weapon, the sheriff’s department reported.
