Overview

A Pine Bluff police officer and a civilian were shot and a suspect killed after a reported disturbance and fight early Saturday morning. According to a press release from the Arkansas State Police, Michael Malik Kawon Lee, 18, of Little Rock was fatally shot by a police officer after the disturbance turned into a fight on the parking lot of Harbor Oaks Restaurant in the Pine Bluff/Jefferson County Regional Park.

The officer, who was not identified, was reportedly shot in the leg and received what the press release described as a “non-life threatening wound.”

Asia Amos, 19, was also wounded by gunfire; her wound is also believed to be non-life threatening. State Police special agents will attempt to determine the source of the gunshot that wounded her.

According to the press release, several individuals had gathered outside the restaurant at about 12:30 a.m. when an altercation broke out. When an officer attempted to pull Lee from the fight, Lee shot the officer and attempted to flee the area when a second officer fired his weapon, striking Lee, who was pronounced dead at the scene. That second officer was also not identified.

Lee’s body will be sent to the State Crime Laboratory at Little Rock for an autopsy. Pine Bluff Police and Kyle Hunter, 11th Judicial District (west) Prosecuting Attorney, requested the incident to be investigated by special agents of the Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division.

Upon completion of the investigation by state police, the investigative file will be turned-over to Prosecuting Attorney Hunter for review and consideration of whether the shooting by police was consistent with Arkansas laws relating to use of deadly force by a law enforcement officers. Police Department policy provides that when an officer is involved in a shooting incident, they are placed on administrative leave with pay pending the completion of both a criminal investigation and an internal investigation to determine if the officer followed department policies.
