Overview

A man was shot and killed during a confrontation with police at a mobile home park in the township early Saturday morning, according to authorities.

Michael Laniado, 27, was fired upon shortly before 4 a.m., after authorities said he threatened officers with a karambit, a knife with a curved blade, as they attempted to arrest him, according to a statement released to reporters Saturday night from the state Attorney General's Office.

The officer who shot Laniado, who has not been identified, is a member of the Ocean County Regional SWAT Team. The Special Weapons And Tactics officers are a specially-trained group of law enforcement officers from Manchester and neighboring towns. The SWAT team was dispatched to the Pine Acres Manor community on Route 37 after Manchester police were met with resistance while trying to execute an arrest warrant around midnight, the statement said.

Legal Action

In February 2018, the Laniado family filed a wrongful lawsuit against Manchester Township police and Ocean County SWAT team members involved in the 2016 shooting death.
