Overview

Goshen police shot and killed a c19 year old Michael Alcaraz on April 5, 2017 and a bystander was wounded by crossfire in the parking lot of Double D’s along Lincolnway East on the city’s south side.

The names of the dead man and bystander had not been released by police as of Wednesday night.

The fatal shooting ended a scenario in which the suspect fired shots while attempting to carjack at least two women at the BP gas station at C.R. 38 and U.S. 33 and then fired more shots in a third attempt to obtain a car at the intersection, according to police and a witness.

Goshen police responded to a call about shots being fired and an alarm at the gas station at 9:24 a.m. Wednesday. A pursuit of a Dodge Durango being driven by the gunman started shortly thereafter. The driver went west on C.R. 38, south to Sourwood onto Lippert Controls' property and then back onto Lincolnway/U.S. 33 and headed north for approximately two miles, according to Goshen police. Police report the man being pursued fired at police with a shotgun several times during the short pursuit.

The driver stopped his Durango in the parking lot of Double D’s Bar and Grill at 827 Lincolnway East where police fatally shot him, according to Indiana State Police Sgt. Trent Smith. A Goshen Police Department officer fired the shot that killed the armed man, Smith said. Several police officers fired their weapons and it is not yet clear which officer fired the fatal shot, he added.
