Police said Wednesday around midnight, law enforcement arrived at an apartment complex on Bob Little Road to investigate a disturbance called into 911. They say the caller said a man was getting a gun, and that children had left the apartment but their mother was still inside.
Springfield Police, along with the Florida Highway Patrol Troopers, and a deputy from the Bay County Sheriff's Office, arrived and said they heard a female yelling for help.
Sergeant Kenneth Crawford of the Springfield Police Department opened the door where he says he found a man who began to raise a semi automatic pistol towards him. Police say with Sergeant Crawford's training and 11 years of experience, he thought his life was in danger and fired at the man, shooting him three times.
Bay County EMS arrived to provide medical care to the man, but the man died.
Sergeant Crawford has been placed on paid administrative leave until he is cleared for duty.
