Overview

On September 5, 2010, Los Angelos Police Department (LAPD) Officer Hernandez responded to a call about a drunken, knife-wielding man threatening a pregnant women.

Some witnesses say that Jamines was unarmed, while others say that while he did have a knife, he didn't understand the officer's Spanish or English - a native Guatemalan, he spoke the Mayan language K'iche'.

Legal Action

The Jamines family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Los Angelos; this lawsuit coincided with a separate lawsuit against Hernandez accusing him of using excessive force.

The Los Angelos Police Department's oversight body rulled that Officer Hernandez was cleared of any wrongdoing, confirming an internal report.

Community and Family Efforts

3 nights of protests in the Central American immigrant neighborhood of Westlake in L.A. followed the oversight body's ruling.
