On November 24, 2008, 20-year-old Luiz Vizcarrundo was shot and killed by Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO) officers during a shootout while fleeing after robbing a convenience store.
Officers were dispatched to the scene after receiving a call of an armed robbery at a convenience store around midnight. According to Chief Dwain Senterfitt, a patrol officer spotted Vizcarrundo in what he believed was the suspect's car at an apartment complex. He attempted to stop Vizcarrundo, who shot at police. The officer fired back before Vizcarrundo drove to another nearby apartment complex. Vizcarrundo exited the car and then fired his gun again; he began running away from officers until he was shot several times and killed.
The JSO and the Florida State Attorney's Office investigated the use of deadly force.
