Overview

A 28-year-old Philadelphia man was killed in an officer-involved shooting near New Castle Wednesday night, county police said.

New Castle County police were in the area of the Rogers Manor Park near the Jefferson Farms development and the Coachman's Manor apartment complex shortly before 8 p.m.  There, county officers responded to the 100 block of Carriage Way, in Coachman's Manor at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday for a police welfare check, said Sr. Cpl. Tracey Duffy, a spokeswoman for county police.

"A man, later identified as the 28-year-old Philadelphia man then engaged in a struggle with an officer and shots were fired," Duffy said in a press release. "The man was transported to Christiana Medical Center where he later died."

Additional information will be released as it becomes available, Duffy added.

At the scene, county officers were seen patrolling the park area near the baseball and soccer fields. County police also blocked the entranceway of the Coachman's Manor apartment complex keeping neighbors from entering their homes while they conducted their investigation.

Neighbors in the area say they didn't hear gunshots.

Robert Foster has lived in the nearby Jefferson Farms development for more than 23 years. He was returning home when he saw a heavy police presence.

"It's starting to become a bad area," he said.
