Overview

Relatives of an armed robbery suspect who was shot and killed Sunday night by a North Charleston police officer are asking for authorities to release any available footage of the gunfire as they try to understand what occurred. 

Family members identified Lawrence Heyward Jr., of North Charleston, as the deceased during a press conference Monday organized by the National Action Network.

Meanwhile, the officer who fired the fatal shot, Lt. Richard Keys, has been placed on administrative leave, North Charleston Police Department spokesman Spencer Pryor said. Keys is a 28-year veteran of the department. The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting.
