Overview

A man was killed after he fired at CHP officers during a traffic stop early Saturday, Oct. 24, in Highgrove, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

About 1:45 a.m., two California Highway Patrol officers stopped a silver pickup truck in a residential area near La Cadena Drive and Iowa Avenue in an unincorporated area just north of Riverside, said sheriff’s Cpl. Robert Martinez.

As officers approached the vehicle, the driver got out and started shooting at them, Martinez said. At least two bullets tore through the officers' cruiser, as evidenced by pictures taken by deputies at the scene.
