Overview

A police officer was involved in a shooting on the Spirit Lake Nation.

The FBI confirmed to WDAZ that a shooting took place overnight involving a tribal police officer.

Few details are being released. Special Agent Cindy Burnham says, “That shooting is under investigation and the FBI is assisting with that investigation.”

It is unknown at this time if anyone was injured or killed in the shooting.

The Spirit Lake Police Department refused to comment.

FBI spokesman Kyle Loven says 31-year-old Joseph Charboneau was shot by Bureau of Indian Affairs officers on June 16.

Loven says the officers went to a residence to arrest another person, and got into an altercation where Charboneau was shot. Loven says no one else was hurt.
