Overview

Police shot and killed Joseph Jewell after he fired at them as they attempted to arrest him on a murder charge.

Jewell was wanted in the death earlier of another teenager at the Mallard Landing apartments. Court records show he told his grandmother he was involved with the shooting and told his sister, “I f’ed up tonight; I shot someone.”

Police got a tip that Jewell was at a hotel along SR 161 in North Columbus. When they knocked on a hotel room door, police said Jewell fired at them. They fired back and the teen was killed.

Columbus Police officials said the officers who fire were veteran officers: Howard Brenner, with 32 years on the job; Mark Dilello, a 23-year veteran; and Glenn Thivener, with CPD 31 years.

Court records show last fall, Jewell had been pulled caught by Sunbury police in Delaware County in a stolen vehicle. Officers said the Cadillac SUV took off and led Delaware County sheriff’s deputies on a 14-mile chase north on I-71 at speeds over 100 mph. That case was winding its way through the courts.
