Overview

Joseph Jaramillo was shot dead by Bernalillo County sheriff's deputies in the South Valley early Wednesday morning after fleeing a traffic stop and allegedly ramming a deputy's car. Bernalillo County Sheriff Manny Gonzales said three deputies fired shots at the suspect, who was identified as 31-year-old Joseph Jaramillo. A woman was also hit by deputies' gunfire.

Sheriff Gonzales said the incident started around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, when a deputy tried to stop a white truck near Bridge and Paulette SW. The vehicle, which Sheriff Gonzales said was later discovered to be stolen, fled the stop. Sheriff Gonzales says the deputy then turned off his lights and sirens and radioed other units to try and find the truck. A different deputy located the truck on Trocadero Pl. SW and again tried to stop it, at which time Sheriff Gonzales said Jaramillo rammed a BCSO marked unit. Sheriff Gonzales said the three deputies fired at the vehicle at that point, hitting and killing Jaramillo.
