Overview

“Officers set up a perimeter and negotiation continued with the negotiator through the phone,” he said. “I know at one point that negotiation stopped and then a shooting took place. I don’t know the details relating to that shooting.”

Additional individuals were initially in the home, but they were released early on before the shooting occurred, according to police.

Gwynn said he did not know why the man had suicidal feelings. Police were notified of the threatened suicide because the man had called a suicide hotline, after which the hotline notified local dispatch.

Legal Action

Claims under state law that police committed willful misconduct and caused the wrongful death of Jose Calzada, 35, on Oct. 21, 2014, were dismissed by U.S. District Judge David Nuffer.
