Overview

According to police, 48-year-old Jose Antonio Gainza, who killed his daughter-in-law before barricading himself inside a southwest Miami-Dade home Tuesday morning, was fatally shot by officers, authorities said.

Officers responded to the home in the 19800 block of Southwest 180th Avenue shortly before 7 a.m., after the man, identified as Gainza, apparently stabbed his daughter-in-law, Miami-Dade Police officials said.

Gainza armed himself and ran into one of the home's bedrooms where he barricaded himself, officials said. SWAT officers tried to get him to surrender but a police-involved shooting ensued, and Gainza was killed, officials said.

"The armed subject then confronted the special response team officers, shots were fired," Miami-Dade Police spokesperson Alvaro Zabaleta said. "Once Miami-Dade Fire Rescue entered, they were the ones who pronounced not only the subject, but unfortunately the victim, deceased."
