Overview

A man was fatally shot by police Sunday in south Laredo after he allegedly stabbed an officer.

The man, 30, has not been identified. Police said the officer who was stabbed was taken to Laredo Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition.

Investigator Joe E. Baeza, Laredo Police Department spokesman, said the shooting happened in the 2700 block of Norton Street, located two blocks south of Cigarroa High School, after officers responded to a report of a domestic disturbance in an apartment. A person had called 911 saying there was an individual in an apartment on Norton who was threatening to harm himself and was armed with a knife.

Baeza said that when officers encountered the man in or near the apartment, he refused to drop the knife. Officers then opened fire when the man allegedly stabbed an officer more than once in his arm.

The man and officer were taken to LMC. Baeza said the man was pronounced dead at the hospital.
