20-year-old Jonathan Buckley exchanged shots with DeKalb County officers after a one-hour standoff at The Reserve at Stone Creek apartment complex and was fatally struck, according to a GBI news release. He died en route to Grady Memorial Hospital.
An officer also sustained an injury from a bullet fragment and was treated at the scene, the release said.
DeKalb police responded to a potential home invasion at the apartment complex, which is located on South Hairston Road, the release said.
Police spokeswoman Shiera Campbell said Buckley was holding a woman against her will. The GBI said an officer fired shots at Buckley, who then barricaded himself in a second apartment, prompting DeKalb SWAT to be called in.
DeKalb officers shot tear gas into the apartment after trying to negotiate with Buckley, the GBI release said. Buckley left the apartment and confronted officers with a gun before they fatally shot him, the release said.
Campbell said Buckley came out firing at the officers in both instances, but the GBI release didn’t confirm that he fired any shots.
The GBI’s investigation is ongoing. It was one of three officer-involved shootings Tuesday.
