A Port Arthur police officer is on paid administrative leave this morning after a man suspected in an attempted armed robbery was shot and killed during an exchange of gunfire outside of a Port Arthur pharmacy.
Chief Deputy Raymond Clark says while the investigation is still in its early stages, it appears as though and armed man entered the Walgreens at about 9:20 p.m. at the corner of 9th Avenue and Highway 365 Thursday evening. Witnesses tell us the man wore a mask and was quite "nonchalant" when he entered the store. He demanded cash and Clark says the store was, in fact, robbed.
Police say the gunman shot at least once into the floor before leaving the store as police arrived.
A male witness followed him outside and did not see him again but heard four more shots around the back of the store.
Police officers pursued the man to a lot near the pharmacy. Witnesses tell us they heard about four shots and police came back to tell customers in the store "that was us. We got him."
Police had crime scene tape at a nearby lot where a senior rehab center was housed. Clark said they had not yet positively identified the gunman and was not sure whether he had a criminal past.
According to the forensic pathologist's report released on August 19, 2016, Brisco was shot three times in the right upper back and once in the left lower back.
