Police Director Michael Mordaga said an officer, who was not identified, was responding to an accident on the border of Maywood and Hackensack involving a motorcycle that crashed as the driver was attempting to elude police after they tried to pull him over in Paramus at 2 p.m.
Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal said Thursday night that the dead man was a Hackensack resident, but did not disclose other information about his identity pending notification of family members.
The police officer involved in the accident sustained unspecified injuries, and a second police officer who went to the scene and attempted to render aid suffered a medical condition or an injury, Grewal said. Both men were taken to the hospital, authorities said. Their injuries and conditions were not known Thursday night.
Grewal said the fatal accident was related to the police chase of a motorcycle that began in Paramus. Police broke off pursuit of the motorcycle for safety reasons at least twice, authorities said. The motorcycle was later involved in an accident in Maywood at Spring Valley Avenue and Coles Street, where the driver was arrested, authorities said.
