Overview

A burglary suspect shot and killed Friday morning by Fort Worth police has been identified as 17-year-old Joe Hernandez, according to the Tarrant County medical examiner’s website.

Hernandez was pronounced dead at 10:27 a.m. Friday in the operating room at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth.

Police did not release any additional details of the shooting on Monday, but police officials identified the officer involved in the shooting as Officer E.S. Charles.

The shooting occurred when two Fort Worth police officers responded to a burglary in progress call in the 2000 block of Loving Avenue in north Fort Worth at about 8:30 a.m. Friday.

Before arriving on the scene, officers were told that a suspect had forced his way into the house, and that the person calling 911 and a young child were inside the residence hiding from the suspect.

One officer went to the backyard where he saw a suspect coming out of a back door, police said.

The suspect pointed a gun at the officer, police said, and the officer fired several times, wounding the suspect.
