Overview

A suspect of a Wednesday bank robbery in Marana is dead after a high-speed chase through Tucson on Thursday.

According to Marana Police Sgt. Chris Warren, detectives and plain clothes officers were tracking a robbery suspect on Thursday. He was believed to be involved in a robbery of a Bank of America branch at Cortaro and Silverbell.

The officers tried to make contact with the suspect at Calle Del Rey and Mission Road. Warren said the suspect rammed a police vehicle before fleeing.

The suspect crashed while getting onto I-19 from Ajo, according to MPD. The suspect then exchanged gunfire with the officers. While the officers were taking cover, the suspect managed to steal a police vehicle. He then drove southbound on I-19 and exited onto Valencia.

The suspect then stopped in the parking lot of a medical plaza, located at 1400 W. Valencia Rd. He then carjacked an elderly man, ran him over and fled the scene.

Several law enforcement agencies joined the search.

The suspect was shot dead at Campbell and Eighth Street, near the University of Arizona campus. Authorities are investigating an officer-involved shooting at the scene, according to Tucson Police Department.
