Overview

Alaska State Troopers shot a Big Lake man early Friday after he threatened to kill his girlfriend and their son, according to an agency dispatch.

Around 3:30 p.m. Thursday, troopers say Jean R. Valescot, 35, called police dispatch and threatened to kill everyone at his home. Troopers and the agency’s Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) responded.

According to AST, they attempted to negotiate with Valescot for several hours. Eventually, the woman was able to escape, but the couple’s 3-year-old did not.

Troopers breached the front door to the home in an effort to communicate with the man. At around 12:20 a.m. Friday, the man came to the door with a pistol in one hand and a shot gun in the other. His son was with him, troopers say.

“The suspect placed the child in imminent danger, and was shot by a SERT member,” troopers wrote.

Valescot died at the scene.

The Alaska Bureau of Investigation is investigating, and the names of any officer involved in the shooting won’t be released for 72 hours, which is standard policy for officer-involved shootings.
