Overview

Boston Police Commissioner William Gross said a 19-year-old man was killed in an officer-involved shooting Monday evening in Dorchester.

The shooting happened in the area of 10 Penhallow St., near the intersection of Melville Avenue.

Several witnesses verified to Boston police that the victim fired gunshots at two Boston police officers before he was fatally shot. Gross said those officers were not struck by gunfire.

"The mayor, myself and many community activists always state that the only way that we're going to stop repeat violent crimes is if we work together to insure that the individuals responsible for these violent crimes are brought to justice," Gross said.

At around 5:16 p.m., police received a call for a report of person shot at 508 Geneva Ave., which is the location of Town Field.

At the same time, a witness alerted two citywide bicycle unit officers of a shooting incident at Town Field. The officers then saw two men fleeing on foot from Town Field onto Melville Avenue, turing left onto Silloway Street and then turning right onto Mather Street.

Gross said one suspect fled straight down Mather Street, while the other turned onto Penhallow Street.

Both officers pursued the suspect who fled onto Penhallow Street. The suspect who fled down Mather Street is still at large, according to Gross.

When the officers arrived at Penhallow Street, one jumped off his bicycle and continued to pursue the suspect on foot, according to Gross. The other officer continued to pursue the suspect on his bicycle.

The officers said they saw that the suspect on Penhallow Street was wielding a firearm.

Gross said the officers told the suspect several times to drop the firearm, and that was also confirmed by numerous witnesses at the scene.

According to several witnesses, the suspect then pointed the gun at the officers and began shooting at them. Gross said the officers were in uniform with their badges clearly displayed.

The officers then returned fire and struck the suspect. According to Gross, the officers immediately rendered first aid to the suspect until Boston Emergency Medical Services arrived.
