Overview

The coroner ruled a teenager's death in Orleans Parish Prison as a suicide.

According to Orleans Parish Coroner Jeffrey Rouse, a preliminary autopsy of Jaquin Thomas shows that the 15-year-old inmate hung himself.

The autopsy showed no evidence of assault, according to Rouse, and his death has been classified as a suicide. Toxicology tests are pending.

The Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office said Thomas was found unresponsive in his cell at 9:19 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 17. Their initial release said Thomas used a mattress cover to asphyxiate himself. He was pronounced dead at University Medical Center just after 10 p.m.

Thomas had been in jail since July.

He was to be tried as an adult on charges of second-degree murder and aggravated battery.
