Overview

A Dearborn  police officer shot and killed 31-year-old Janet Wilson following a chase outside the Fairlane Town Center on Wednesday — the second fatal shooting involving the department in recent months.

The incident began at 4:10 p.m. Wednesday, around the time when mall security arrived to a scene involving a woman who was “distraught.” Witnesses described her as having “some type of mental incapacity,” and soon after the mall security arrived, Shaw said, she became “combative” and drove off, almost striking mall security with the car.

Wilson fled in a black Chevrolet, and Dearborn police chased it. But within a block or two, she was stopped in traffic on Hubbard Drive, and officers tried to approach the vehicle and arrest her, Shaw said.

According to police, during that attempt, she again tried to flee, almost running over an officer in the process.before an officer opened fire, Shaw said.

Janet Wilson, 31, died from multiple gunshots, according to the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office, which said the death was a homicide. The office was expected to turn over findings to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.
