The Charlottesville Police Department said the officers involved in Friday's shooting death of a sexual assault suspect have been placed on paid administrative leave.

Police said this happened as a part of protocol, pending the outcome of the investigation by Virginia State Police and review by the Charlottesville Commonwealth's Attorney.

Forty-two-year-old J.C. Hawkins, Jr. was shot and killed by police on Friday after a sexual assault and robbery at a home on Riverside Avenue.

Officers say Hawkins sexually assaulted and robbed a 72-year-old woman.

The victim gave a description matching Hawkins, and when officers caught up with him, he ran away.

Police said Hawkins waded into the Rivanna River nearby and pointed a gun at officers when he was shot and later died.

Police said there is no threat to the community.

The Virginia State Police is handling the investigation into the shooting.
