Overview

The man fatally shot by Huntsville police late Wednesday has been identified as a mentally-ill 31-year-old who is believed to have killed another man and injured a second person.

Haraesheo Rice was gunned down by officers outside a home on Green Meadow Drive after he pointed a gun at them, Lt. Stacy Bates said. Police encountered Rice when they went to investigate a possible shooting on Creighton Avenue between Sturburg and Gardenside drives. Rice was identified to AL.com by Madison County Deputy Coroner Tyler Berryhill.

Police were called to the area by a shooting victim on Creighton Avenue around 10 p.m. The victim, who suffered multiple gunshot wounds, ran from the house on Green Meadow after Rice forced his way inside and started shooting, police said.

At the home, police found the body of 47-year-old Keith Ricks, Berryhill said. Ricks was shot to death and also suffered blunt force trauma.
