Overview

56 year-old Greg Gunn was shot and killed after a brief struggle with police.

Police say Gunn had a small pole in his possession when the officer began to shoot. There was a slight struggle that continued for about a block or so. In that time, the officer shot and killed him.

Police did not release any information on the officer, but did say he was young, and was with the department for less than four years. He’s also placed on administrative leave. The race of the officer was also not released.

According to neighbors, Gunn was calling out for help during the altercation with two police officers, banging on one of their doors before being shot four or five times by police.

On Monday February, 29, 2016, Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange gave an update during a press conference. He said the Montgomery Police Department has no immediate knowledge of what led up to the shooting. All evidence, including body camera footage, was turned over to the State Bureau of Investigation without review by Montgomery police. The only new information released was the identity of the police officer involved to be officer A.C. Smith.

Legal Action

On March 2, 2016, it was announced that Montgomery police officer Aaron "A.C." Smith, 23, had been arrested and charged with murder in connection to the officer-involved shooting death of Gregory Gunn.

July 2016 The family of Greg Gunn, who was shot and killed by a Montgomery Police officer in February, has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the City of Montgomery, Montgomery Police Department officer Aaron Cody Smith and police chief Earnest Finley.
