Overview

New York police officers shot and killed a 32-year-old George Tillman, a licensed electrician and father of five from Maryland. early Sunday morning April 17, 2016 in South Ozone Park, Queens.

According to the NYPD, two plain-clothed police officers operating an unmarked department auto were traveling southbound on 135th Street and encountered a double-parked SUV with a man standing next to it holding an open bottle of alcohol.

As the officers approached him, they observed a firearm in his waistband, police say.

The officers attempted to engage the man, who fled the scene, prompting a foot pursuit during which verbal commands were given to the suspect.

As the suspect approached the corner of 135th Street and 116th Avenue, a second unmarked department auto, with three members of the 106th Precinct encountered him there, investigators say. The NYPD says that as the suspect was confronted by the officers, he reached for his firearm and four officers then discharged their service weapons. The suspect was struck several times in the torso.

EMS responded and took him to Jamaica Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The officers were not injured, but were taken to Long Island Jewish Medical Center for treatment and evaluation.
