Overview

Two police units arrived on the scene to confront Boyd, still armed with the knife. Preliminary investigation revealed that the officers repeatedly directed Boyd to drop the knife, which he did not. The prosecutor’s office said Boyd then brandished the knife in a threatening manner and an officer fired his weapon, striking Boyd.

Boyd was taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center, for emergency surgery. Boyd did not survive and was pronounced dead at 4:49 a.m., Onofri said in a release.

According to the release, the Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the use of force by police in accordance with the Attorney General’s Use of Force Guidelines.

In a bizarre revelation to a police-involved shooting on Saturday, there may have been family ties between a cop on the scene and the suspect.

Several sources with knowledge of the situation who wished to remain anonymous say Gary Boyd Sr., 42, was shot three times by an officer whose partner — also present — was Boyd’s nephew.
