Overview

Investigators with the Department of Justice looked into an officer-involved shooting in Stockton on Sunday that resulted in the death of a robbery suspect.

He was identified Monday as 33-year-old Gary Allen Hawkins, of Stockton.

The San Joaquin County Gang Task Force said it tried to stop a man driving a vehicle that it believed was involved in a robbery that happened on Friday.

Officers got out of their patrol cars to make contact with the man when he accelerated his vehicle in reverse and tried to run them over, according to deputies.

San Joaquin County sheriff’s Deputy Les Garcia said at 9 p.m., task force officers conducted a traffic stop on the 200 block of S. Adelbert Avenue on a vehicle matching the description from an armed robbery that occurred the day before on the 100 block of S. Cardinal Avenue.

According to authorities, Hawkins was driving the stolen Mercedes in the 200 block of South Adelbert Avenue on Feb. 23 when members of the multiagency San Joaquin County gang task stopped the vehicle, which was believed to have been involved in an earlier burglary.
