Overview 
Frank Jerome Smart, 39, of Verona, died at 12:22 a.m. Monday at UPMC Mercy hospital, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office said. An autopsy was inconclusive and a ruling on a cause of death will not be made until toxicology and tissue tests are conducted. Court records show that Smart, who investigators say was taken to the hospital after becoming ill in his cell, was arraigned at 6 a.m. Sunday on charges of forgery, theft by deception and related crimes.
