Overview

On July 14, 2018, Erick Aguirre and a friend, Samantha Goode, were traveling in San Bernardino area of California when they were stopped by Rialto Police Department (RPD) officers. RPD officers say they tried to pull over Aguirre earlier, but he led them on a 10-minute pursuit into Bloomington.

Officers said that Aguirre would not exit the car.  They broke the car's rear passenger window and released a K-9, which attacked Goode and mauled her leg.  they then shot Aguirre after seeing a shotgun.  However, Goode stated that she and Aguirre complied and were generally non-threatnening.  The only witness, she says that the police officers were never in danger and not threatened, as evident by the fact that she was not arrested.

The RPD opened an investigation; however they have not released details on why Aguirre was pulled over, if he reached for the shotgun, or any relevant body cam footage.

Community and Family Efforts

In August 2018, family and friends of Erick Aguirre held a 50 person protest that included a picket line in front of the RPD.  The family has demanded an independent investigation, and Aguirre's death is part of a larger community frustration with police killings of young Chicano men in the San Bernarndino area.
