Overview

Officials on Monday released the name of a man killed when he was shot by police over the weekend in Corsicana.

Justice of the Peace Connie Hickman identified the man as 21-year-old Eliseo Mercado. His body was sent for an autopsy, she said.

Mercado “was reportedly thinking of killing himself” and had fired a gun into the air when Corsicana police officers arrived at the Cottonwood Trailer Park, located in the 900 block of Cottonwood Circle, about 1:30 a.m. Saturday, states a news release issued by the department.

Mercado refused to drop a handgun despite police orders, instead pointing the weapon at his head, then at an officer, opening fire, according to the statement released by Corsicana Police Chief Randy Bratton.

Two officers returned fire, he said, and Mercado was pronounced dead at the scene.
